Dust 514 Beta Test Impressions

So some of you may know I did get one of the 5000 North American beta keys.. Hooorrraaah to that.. Sort of felt like I did when MAG came out.. As the privacy agreements for the beta are pretty strict, I can only give my opinions on certain things and I cannot share any videos or screenshots.. Boohoo.. But what I will give you guys is a report every couple of days on the different aspects of the game, changes they make during the beta good or bad and hope to give you all some insight to what is going to be a huge game on PSN.

Just to start, the beta test as of right now is on a game build that pre-dates the EVE fanfest. Basically it is what they played during fanfest. I have done game alpha and beta tests. There is a certain feel to the game as it stands now that feels like a well polished alpha tests.. There are some exploits present but I did not have my note pad out when I played yesterday.
The beta has too modes a DM and a Objective based Rush/Conquest style mode. The maps look bigger than they are but transportation is helpful but not needed. At spawn on the attack you need to move forward with your team to capture control points and enemy turrets, supply depots and mobile spawns. As you move forward on the map and capture the control points the final base opens with 3 objectives. You will need to capture and hold these 3 objectives to open the 4th and final objective.. Boy, that sounds familiar??? Can anyone say MAG Escalation ?? The maps are not fully detailed in this part of the build but it is easy to see who CCP can vary the maps on scale and layout pretty easily.
The DM modes is tough, the 2 current maps are out in the canyons and the second is at the base. The canyons map on DM is good, but could be a snipers heaven. However, at this point your name, health and ammo bar appears above your head. It is easy to tell what enemy is near death based on this bar. However, as seen even yesterday day one, many players will bum rush you firing like crazy if they see your low on health. And Halo Hopping is a skill you will need to learn..
The objective map was where it was at, most players went to this area. In this version of the build there is no squad or group support but they say it is coming with the next patch. Nonetheless, I had the most fun in this mode.
The player’s home or barracks looks cool but nothing to special here. But this is where you will edit your skills and goodies for your character and vehicles, manage your dropsuit and locate contracts and quickmatches.
Grouping up tonight with some leaders of other clans from MAG to see if we can really test teamwork and the comms.. Check back tomorrow for a more brief but updated report..

Also, you mentioned the forum is private, I had only intended to make the actual Dust 514 group private. I cannot make some parts of the forum private without making the whole thing private due to the way the URLs work.
Personally, I think the whole forums should be member only so that we can discuss clan related stuff and it will only be accessible to members.

As far as the super sticky I only realized it after I did it.. Didn’t know what super sticky was but I am sure to use it at some point.. As far as access to the forums go, we will talk about it at todays’ OM..

I have played on both the 24 player and 32 player matches the maps were similar but different but their size seemed to allow more room for more intense battles. It would seem that they are a little to big for 24 12 v12.. As I have right now I have only seen one drop ship which BTW killed me at a ridiculous distance.. But I figure that was a Dev as my kill came up with no name, just my name in red.. I was also at the time kind of stuck literary between a rock in a hard place.. So actually the death was welcome.. I saw the ship fly off to one side of the map and when I respawned I did not see it for the rest of the round. Back to what I was saying the scale is huge spawn points are a enormous asset but can be provided by team members.. There is a whole new level of creating loadouts, deployment configs to suit almost any situation. Specialist beyond the gun will be a bigger role than killers I can tell you that now.. Sure they will be important but specialists will be king. Those with skills to fit that situation at the right time it would seem can and will be the difference win or loose.

Yes Dank it will be free to download. However they had said that you wouuld be required to by $20 worth of credits Aurum or ISK.
At Frank, that was something, I was going to but out there for discussion among all the members when we get closer to release. I am unsure what race we should be. In the beta I went with Gallente just because their back story about being the only remaining democracy. But we as a clan will look at the Race that will be suit our clan. Do you have a preference at this poin??

Yea, I am trying to figure a way to post some of the articles about Dust and its specifics. This should allow me to share some more info.. The beta is only running Thursday to Sunday from 7 am to 7 pm eastern.. So I will posting on those days.. Each day I am going to talk about something I like and something I dislike or would like changed.

Alright… There was not much of a change in this weeks Beta testing.. The new beta build is supposed to drop but next session on Thursday..
Grouped with some good guys the last couple of days.. I feel like such a noob sometimes as these guys seem to have a much better understanding of the skills and overall menu mechanics.. At first I thought most of the guys in my corp I was fighting with were EVE guys. But there are more than a few I recognize from MAG. There were beast players in MAG and they are bad ass in Dust.. I cannot say who as we are not supposed to reveal our affiliations.
So I am getting a better understanding of the weapons and have started to upgrade me skills.. I am finding the barrel drift during fire is much reduced but the reloading is till driving me crazy..
Seeing some vehicles now and they’re bad ass but not too overpowered and can be countered even on foot. Teamwork is showing up more and more..

If you look at eve, you will have to specialize no matter what, you will have train your charachter continuously to get waht you want and have the skillset you want to specialize in. If you are a killer, i would suggest you look for a skillset that accomodates lots of killing.

@pazesd actually in Dust you can’t see other people’s PSN ID. This is because you choose a new name upon creating your Dust character.
PSN IDs are considered as EVE usernames. And when creating an EVE username, CCP recommends you don’t share it as you only use it for logging into the eve client, so it basically acts like a unofficial password, but this won’t be exactly feasible for Dust.

@ Paz I know these guys by name, I am seeing a couple of MAG clan leaders, a few officers and a few random kick ass players.. However, I would stress that over this last 4 day session I have seen a total of 5 players who’s names are familiar, and a few more that I do not but based on the conversations I heard, I do know who they’re.. The game allows you to choose your first and last name for the game. I choose to keep my PSN as my first name and left my last name blank. It makes it much easier to read the kill feed… And those other people I am referencing did the same thing.. That was why I was able to figure out who was who as none of them were usiing a mic… Strange don’t you think..
@ tech…. I was thinking of being a medic in this game and yes there is a medic so to speak. This is under the technology side and shit is it expensive.. To rank up on this path is going to cost huge.. Certainly too much to allow a cross specialization, it will be nearly impossible to be both… Finding the balance between the weapon and the skills will be huge.. I think at some point we are going to need a armory specialist.. Someone in the clan who knows all the skill trees to reach a certain battlefield specialty.

i’m thinking on this one, i’m going to run 2 soldiers, one on my main account and one on my girlfriends account (minxymoodles off the top of my head) and my main will be where i do the character i want to be properly, and use her account to mess with and make a soldier out of my comfort zone, making sure that i stay clear of whatever i’ve used on the main.

So, as some of you may know… CCP released a bunch more BETA keys and are now giving out more… Here is the link https://secure.dust514.com/
This past weekend for the beta was a double XP weekend.. During the times I played there were about 200 people online.. In previous weeks it was around 20 so this is a huge improvement. So it was a lot easier to get into a game and do some real testing.
The main issue for this weekend was LAG.. The lag on in some rounds was huge players were, jumping, sliding, phasing in and out you name it.. I actually got stuck and in and half out of a wall.. That of course until someone killed me. However, I would note this type of thing is not uncommon at all for closed beta tests. I have been in now for more than a month and I will say this, I have only crashed once.. Meaning my system only froze one time. This is significant because in every other closed beta with the exception of the Uncharted 3 closed beta, everyone of them had issues in the start with freezing and crashing. BTW is crash is when the game locks up and sets your system to restart automatically with no input from you. This is a good sign of a strong server architecture ..
No major improvements in gameplay this week.. I would note that there was brop ships appearing regularly now but they seem to have a hard time not crashing due to the lag… However, one did roadkill me this weekend and it did look like he did it on purpose so there must be some control.. He was also spawning troops from it so it did make a difference on the battlefield. Especially at the final base.. In addition more tanks were used as well this weekend.. The people using this vehicle have been in as long as me and they must have put in some serious hours to unlock some of the tank upgrades I saw…
The most distressing thing I noticed this week was two factors.. It would appear that there is some level of character shielding that is available.. Now I was still able to kill the guys using it but it took almost two full clips to get the kill.. Then there is some upgraded weapons that were way to overpowering. There was one guy who owned me like 10 times in one round using a “Breach AR”, not granted I know the player, he is the leader of a SVER clan and known to be a bad ass player.. I killed him only once even though I was hunting him after my 5th straight death to him.. Although he was not using this shield and in almost every engagement I had the drop on him aiming right at this head, he wouldjust simply turn and fire what appears to be 2 shots and I was dead.. Now any other player it takes somewhere between 4 to 8 rounds to get a kill even aiming right at their head. But this guy boom two shots dead… So, it would seem that upgrades will matter much more than we have been lead to believe.
There are still issues with the gamer tag appearing not above the players head but 20 meters behind them,, But the asset interfaces are working much better.

Well, I just spent four hours with the Dust 514 Beta, and I’ve got to say that there’s some good, some bad, and quite a large need for messaging.
So far, the game plays like a clunky version of Halo, with not nearly the amount of streamlining that that series provides. The “militia” weapons are practically ineffective while utilizing the Assault dropsuit, especially when matched up against the Heavy soldiers with more ammo, more damage, and more armor, with hardly any perceived disadvantage. Especially while playing the “Ambush” gametype, I see no reason why every soldier would not be equipped with the Heavy dropsuit and a minigun.
The upgrade system, so far, is pretty extensive, but that seems to be more of a disadvantage than an advantage, in my opinion. In order to upgrade something, you need to go to the marketplace, buy a skillbook, apply that skillbook, and then utilize skill points to upgrade that skill at all.
By example, I’ve always been a very close-quarters, melee-focused player. So, I naturally was inclined to look into melee damage (which by default is worse than MAG). I went to the store, and purchased the melee skillbook with ISK (in-game currency), and then had to use that skillbook in the “skills” section of my character sheet (completely different menu). I then had to upgrade that skill to level 1 using SP (skill points) for it to have any effect.
That was 3 different menu screens, with a transfer of resources to three different types (ISK -> Skillbook -> Skill Points) all to get a single upgrade. When I compare this to the comparatively simply system utilized in MAG or even in your basic RPG, I’m a little discouraged. This seems to be designed far more complex than it needs to be.
Case in point, look at the way that weapons are swapped in-battle. Similar to MAG, they’ve implemented the “cog-wheel” system for equipment, swapping you from Light-Weapon (Assault Rifle) -> Sidearm (Pistol) -> Equipment (Nano Hive). While this idea works, in theory, the problem occurs when you hold down the R2 button for just a little too long, and then a little menu comes up with a radial interface. If you don’t move the analog stick to make your choice, the weapon stays in hand, and does not swap.
For players like me who often use my sidearm as an “emergency finisher” this presents a huge problem, because I cannot depend on my tap to bring up the second weapon before my opponent finishes me off. Perhaps some practice will improve my timing, but I’m a little discouraged so far. This seems like another effort to provide two different systems, with neither being completely effective.
This is also very important because that pistol may be all that you have. If you fire an entire clip into an enemy with the Militia (Default) Assault Rifle, there’s no guarantee that you’ll actually get the kill. Instead, it’s likely that he’ll get away, especially if he’s using a just slightly better dropsuit than the default, so finishing with the pistol is necessary. But, with the inputs the way they are now, that looks like a problem.
Finally, let me comment on the resource purchases. It took me a few games to realize that you have to re-purchase your weapons, dropsuits, and items for EVERY SINGLE DEATH. I’d taken the time to create two loadouts – A Breach Assault loadout and a Shotgun loadout, but midway through one of my battles, I suddenly had my first loadout display as “INVALID.” So, I swapped to the Shotgun. A couple deaths later, that one, too, was INVALID.
What that meant was that I suddenly couldn’t drop in. I couldn’t play the game anymore. In the middle of the ****ing battle.
I was a little annoyed.
Eventually, I figured out that I needed to resupply every loadout that I wanted to use in-between each battle. The eventual problem, however, is that doing this requires going back to your Mercenary Headquarters, which I can see as splitting up a team if you’re in a group with other players. (Like clanmates, for example.) So, if you haven’t set yourself up with a couple hundred sets of your current loadouts, you’re going to have to drop out of the game in order to resupply several times during a playsession.
I realize that this is a beta, and that there are bound to be things that need to be adjusted and worked out, but there are a large number of design decisions that just don’t make sense to me here. Perhaps some better messaging systems could help, but overall things just don’t seem “right” to me with Dust 514.

just played my first match, all i have to say is wow, theres a lot to it, i can see the Halo thing in there with the shields, and such, and the overall gameplay is brilliant, took a few seconds in the home base to try some things out, get used to the controls and whatnot, the default classes are a bit weak but thats to be expected, only used the assault and recon classes, the sniper rifle (for me) felt like a bolt action, which isn’t too bad but with the lack of one hit kill headshots i felt a little weak in comparison to the other members of the team. i’m not sure what game mode i was playing in i just picked the first game on the list and went for it.
i know its an MMOFPS but to me the market system seems a little overwhelming, its nice how its laid out, and how you buy weapons and such, and its good that you can do so mid battle however, you would need to know exactly where everything is due to the boot time for inactivity, which is understandable. you’d have to look for weapons and such outside of the match.
as for rewards after a match, i got 2 kills, and 2 deaths and somehow managed to nearly double my original ISK somehow, i didn’t do anything stand out, i shot a couple of guys, shot at a vehicle to little avail and somehow pulled off a decent sum of money.
looking at the drop suit skill i find it quite annoying that i have to buy a new dropsuit to learn different abilities, but i can see the pros of this, it allows you to specialise in one particular thing rather than being a jack of all trades, leading to specific roles you’re good at, but on the flip side that could lead to a quick defeat if you’re up against a team of people who are good at 1 or two things, your adaptability is greatly decreased.
i do like the way you sort your skills out and buy them, i think that is quite easy to work around, i only had one weapon so i couldn’t go into what Fury said about the radial menu because i didn’t have to deal with it.
all in all i like it, its different. and the maps are huge which gives you a sense of being part of something bigger. it also confuses you slightly in that the maps are that big and there are that many flank routes you don’t know if there are enemies round the corner or if you’re going to be flanked from behind.
also the game isn’t that helpful, i purchased a number of new assault rifles (i looked to Fury’s post and saw i had to buy many to keep myself in them, so i spent the better part of 100,000 ISK on them, ended up with 60+ of them) and i have no idea how to use them, i can’t find them to put them in my loadout.
another thing there doesn’t seem to be anyway of getting ammo, its like they expect you die before you run out, unfortunately i didn’t and was left stranded on a turret, which wasn’t too bad, but i was stationary and vulnerable from behind. the game doesn’t help new players it assumes you’re all dust masters and know everything, i don’t i’m confused as hell. and a little box that comes up before the game or during various menus would be insanely helpful.

Sparx, first off you can get ammo by equipping what they call a “Hive” into the battlefield. This is a device that you equip in the drop suit fitting.. Some Hives give ammo, others give health and still others create a forward spawn point.. Each level cost a lot of ISK… But that is how you get ammo and stuff. Now when buying weapons be careful that you have unlocked the level skill to use that weapon.. AS for how much ISK you earn. You earn ISK win or loose.. If you win the ISK bonus I have seen range from 35 to 45 thousand and for a loss from 12 to 20 thousand ISK dependent on your number of kills.. Even if you get no kills but win the round you will receive the lower end of the ISK scale. However, kills and actions on the battlefield do benefit your Skill points.. SP.. So if you get a lot of kills or hack a lot of turrets or clear or set the objective, you will gain even more SP.

In the Beta as well, and just got the Assault Prototype Suits, all tricked out with the Prototype SMG is around 40, 000 ISK a piece. You don’t get money based on how well you do, you get ISK from contracts. Every game you get a fixed amount of money (ISK). SP (Skill Points) are based on how well you do, and are needed to unlock and upgrade skills for better equipment. It’s a complex system, but very rewarding.
If anyone needs the BETA, I’m willing to gameshare it. Also, looking to get BF3 Premium hopefully from anyone.
I have a code here right now. If you’re going to use it, just say it, so the rest won’t waste their time.
